This is the question the whole thing turns on. We pull the published flood, seismic, wildfire and soil data for that point from United States government sources and run every kit in the Index against it.

A flood zone can change across one street, so an exact address is the difference between a picture of a neighbourhood and an answer about your land. We use it to look up public hazard data and nothing else, and it is never put in a link or a web address.

All in, what are you working with?

All in means land work, plans, the kit, trades and finishes, not the kit price alone. This never removes a kit, because a published kit price is often a third of the finished cost and comparing the two would be arithmetic nonsense. It changes what we say about them.

That is the whole problem in four numbers. Where a maker publishes nothing, we say so rather than guessing, and you get the exact questions to send them instead. How the grade is computed.

Why you can trust the order

No kit maker has ever paid for placement here.

We intend to earn a commission on every kit bought through this site, ours or anybody else’s, disclosed every time and never added to your price. Getting paid either way is exactly what lets us rank honestly, including when our own kit loses. Placement is the one thing that is not for sale, at any price.

The site owner also owns one of the kit companies ranked here. Every one of its rows is flagged as ours, it gets no forgiveness for missing data, and you can hide it from the Index with one switch and no account. How that conflict is handled.

What does it cost?
Nothing. The finder, the grades, the Index and every kit page are free and stay free. You make a free account at the last step so we can save your ranking and tell you when something on your shortlist changes. No card is asked for anywhere on this site.
Why do I have to give you my email to see the results?
Because the ranking is computed for your land, not for everybody, so an account is what lets us save it, let you come back to it, and tell you when a kit on your list changes. What if I build somebody else's kit?
Good, and we hope you do if it fits you better. We are working to be an affiliate of every maker, so we earn something whichever kit you pick and it never changes your price. Being paid either way is exactly what lets us rank honestly and say out loud when our own kit loses. Placement is never for sale at any price.
Is anything on here paid for by the makers?
No. No kit maker has ever paid for placement here and none ever will. The scoring code cannot read a commission rate on any kit, ours included, and that is enforced in the database schema and in the build rather than in a promise.
How do you decide what works on my land?
We pull the published hazard data for your point from United States government sources, the USGS for seismic, FEMA's National Flood Hazard Layer for flood, the US Forest Service or FEMA's National Risk Index for wildfire, and the NRCS soil survey. Then every kit in the Index is run against it as pass and fail gates, never averaged, so a good price can never bury the fact that a kit cannot sit above your base flood elevation.
What if a maker publishes nothing?
Then we say so, and the kit lands in a third list that is neither a match nor a rejection. Surviving on silence is not the same as passing. A kit only counts as proven when every hazard question at your address can be answered from what its maker published, and across the whole Index almost nobody manages that. Those kits come with the exact questions to send instead.
Do I need to own land already?
No, and this is more useful before you buy a lot than after. Run an address you are considering and you will see what it does to your options before you are committed to it.
What if I just want the answer and nothing else?
Then take it. Plenty of people will run the finder, see which kits fit their land, and never come back. That is a perfectly good outcome and nobody will chase you.
